In the annals of American military history, tales of valor and selflessness shine as beacons of inspiration. One such story is that of Corporal Jason L. Dunham, a Marine whose extraordinary courage in Iraq not only saved the lives of his comrades but also left an indelible mark on all who serve aboard the ship bearing his name, the USS Jason Dunham (DDG-109).
The Legacy of USMC Corporal Jason Dunham

Born on November 10, 1981, in the small town of Scio in Alleghany County, New York, Jason Dunham grew up with his parents, Dan and Deb, along with two brothers and a sister. A 2000 graduate of Scio High School, he was known for his athleticism, particularly on the basketball court, and his innate leadership qualities. Friends and family recall his infectious smile and a personality that drew others to him.
In July 2000, driven by a sense of duty and patriotism, Dunham enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He completed recruit training on October 27, 2000, and initially served as a Security Force sentry at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia. By early 2004, he had risen to the rank of corporal and was assigned as a squad leader with 4th Platoon, Company K, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, based in Al-Kar?bilah, Iraq.
On April 14, 2004, during a patrol near Husaybah, Iraq, Corporal Dunham's unit was ambushed. Amidst the chaos, they intercepted vehicles fleeing the scene. As Dunham approached a white Toyota Land Cruiser, the driver attacked him, leading to a close-quarters struggle. During the altercation, the insurgent released a live grenade. Without hesitation, Dunham covered the grenade with his helmet and body, absorbing the blast to protect his fellow Marines. He sustained severe injuries and was evacuated to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where he succumbed to his wounds on April 22, 2004.
For his conspicuous gallantry, Corporal Dunham was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor on January 11, 2007, becoming the first Marine to receive the nation's highest military decoration for actions in the Global War on Terrorism.
